Take Your Skates Into the Outdoors!

Rainbow Socks and Roller SkatesWith beautiful weather like we’ve been having here in Austin, TX, we totally understand that you don’t want to be indoors any more than you have to. That’s why we are encouraging our skaters to take their roller skates and roller blades and skate outdoors! Are you not sure if you have the right equipment for the job? Playland Skate Center has outlined the top 3 most important things that you need to have if you are planning on skating outdoors.

1. Safety Gear

Skating outdoors has just as high, if not higher of a risk of falling – and the cement is a lot harder to fall on. Remember this when you are getting to head out for a skate. Snap on your helmet and strap on all of the appropriate pads: knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Even the tiniest pebble or little bit of loose gravel could send your heels over your head.

2. Wheels

Wheels come in so many shapes and sizes there is no way we could list them all for you, but when you are looking for a good outdoor wheel keep these two things in mind: durometer and dimensions. The durometer of a wheel essentially measures how hard/soft the wheel is. This is also called the “A” rating. Softer wheels will be able to better handle the rough surfaces you encounter when skating outdoors. The lower the A rating on the wheel, the softer it is. Especially if you are a skater that is new to the outdoors on wheels, you want wheels that are both tall and wide. These will give you the smoothest, most stable ride.

3. Bearings

Your bearings are going to get a beating when you take them outdoors. Subjecting them to dirt and moisture will cause them to wear quickly and therefore reduce the quality of your ride. If you only have one set of bearings, make sure you clean them before putting them back in your indoor wheels. Instead, we suggest having a set of bearings that are simply dedicated to outdoor skating.

Do you have more questions about outdoor skating equipment, or are you ready to purchase a pair of wheels and bearings to skate on this weekend? Come by our pro shop today! We can help you find exactly what you are looking for and we guarantee that we will beat ANY competitors price!

The History of the Disco Ball

Roller Skate Disco Ball

When we say “disco ball” what is the first thing that comes to mind? Depending on your age, you’re going to have very different memories of the first time you saw a disco ball. Those of you in the Playland Skate Center family, we know exactly what comes to your mind when we talk about a disco ball – for the rest of you, keep reading to find out what we’re talking about!

The History of the Disco Ball

The first disco ball showed up in a Boston ballroom in 1897. The disco ball gained its popularity in the roaring 20s. In this era of wealth, younger generations were flaunting their new found freedom as they partied in nightclubs and speakeasies drinking illegal liquor. It was disco balls that lit these establishments. The disco ball found it’s next following in the 70s with the disco era. At a time when the music was intertwined with the disco ball and roller skating was also gaining huge popularity, you could find disco balls in just about any establishment that played the latest music and had a place to dance.

In the roller skating and family fun industry, the disco ball is something that we just don’t want to let go. We fell like if you walk into a roller skating rink that doesn’t have a disco ball, you’re missing out on an essential piece of the experience. Playland Skate Center has a very unique disco ball of our own. Suspended from the ceiling in the middle of our skating rink, it’d be hard for you to miss our HUGE roller skate shaped disco ball! It’s the only one like it that you’ll ever see!

Come on our to Playland Skate Center this weekend and make your own roller skating memories under the only roller skate shaped disco ball out there!

Beginning to Roll

Sure Grip Roller SkateYou’ve been skating with Playland Skate Center for several months now and you just can’t get enough. You’ve finally decided that it’s time for you to invest in your very own pair of roller skates! Or – you are a parent who’s child has become what we lovingly like to call a “rink rat” and they are begging for a pair of skates of their own. Playland Skate Center has some tips that you should keep in mind when trying to buy the perfect roller skate for a beginner skater.

Don’t Buy Top of the Line

It’s true – if you are just getting into roller skating, we’d love for you to buy the best of the best, but in reality, you need to buy and try all different types of equipment before you decide what’s best for you. Also, as a beginner skater, you’ll need to spend the biggest part of your investment on protective gear, wheels, and bearings.

Upgrade the Right Aspects of Your Skates

If you are trying to buy skates for you or a family member that are ready to roll out of the box, you’re going to have a little bit of a harder time. The best thing to do is buy a boot that works for you and fits, then upgrade to the nicer wheels and bearings. First impressions are everything. You want to be sure that the skate glides smoothly and doesn’t want to turn to one side or the other. Nicer quality bearings and wheels is where you’re going to create the most comfortable skate for you.

We have seasoned skaters working in our pro shop everyday that would love to help you pick out the right skate for you or your family member. Come on by Playland Skate Center in Austin, TX today to shop. We guarantee that we’ll be ANY competitors prices!

Speeding On To Greatness

Texas Speed ClubApolo Ohno is an eight-time Olympic medalist on the short track speed skating team. Did you know that he started his career on speed skates? Playland Skate Center offers weekly speed skating classes and practice to those of you that have Olympic dreams – or even just a dream to have fun and get fit!

What is Speed Skating?

Speed skating is the sport of racing on either roller skates or ice skates around a 100 meter track. It’s a pack-style sport – you’ve got to maintain a low body position and learn how to maneuver your way in and out of the pack to beat the rest of the skaters across the finish line. While roller speed skating is not an Olympic sport, it’s where many of the Olympic ice speed skaters got their start.

Learning to Speed Skate

Learning to speed skate takes time, determination, and dedication. Experienced skaters make their powerful maneuvers look effortless, but those moves have come from hours and hours of practice. We welcome all levels of speed skaters to our classes! The coach of the Texas Speed Club, Ed “Sonny” Felter, will teach you speed skating drills, techniques, and put you through endurance training so that you can condition your back and leg muscles to improve your endurance and speed.

Speed Skating for Beginners

Our beginner speed skating class is every Friday night from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. It is free to first time students, we only request that you bring a helmet. We will even provide you with a pair of inline skates to try out!

The Texas Speed Club

Playland Skate Center is proud to host the Texas Speed Club at our Austin, TX skating rink. They offer both inline and quad speed skating for your entire family! They are a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the sport of quad and inline speed skating. They train to participate in short track indoor speed skating competitions sanctioned by USA/RS and NIRA throughout the year.

We’d love to see you come out and try on a pair of speed skates at Playland this Friday night!
